Form follows taste
How do you bring the experience of freshly churned artisanal ice cream into the home? That question was a key starting point in this project, carried out by Comate Engineering & Design for Belgian start-up Cupple, a spin-off from Australian Homemade Ice Cream.
I supported Comate in mapping the desired use cycle and translating it into product architecture. In parallel with the technical development, I developed a form language that reflected the client’s ambitions while responding to the possibilities and constraints of the technology.
Taste was central to the proposition. Cupple invested extensively in developing its range of ice cream mixes, while the machine was designed to turn these into freshly churned ice cream within minutes. By developing technology, usability and design around that experience, the team created a distinctive consumer product that went on to exceed its Kickstarter funding target.
The result was made possible by close collaboration between several specialist partners. Image credits: Cupple, Comate and WIT photography & videography.
